Why Shopify Won Ecommerce

Shopify isn't a framework — it's a platform. But it made the framework decision irrelevant for ecommerce. You don't choose WordPress or Next.js for your store. You choose Shopify and the framework choice is made for you. That's the real infrastructure insight: platforms eat frameworks.

The Custom Exception

At scale, ecommerce goes custom. Our scan shows Shopee on React, Lazada on React, Zalora on Next.js, Tokopedia on Next.js. The pattern: SMB uses Shopify, enterprise builds custom on React/Next.js. WooCommerce (WordPress) is caught in between — too complex for Shopify simplicity, too limited for enterprise customization.

The Magento Legacy

Magento (now Adobe Commerce) still appears in our enterprise scans. It's the legacy ecommerce equivalent of Drupal in government — deeply embedded, expensive to maintain, hard to leave. The Magento-to-Shopify/custom migration is the ecommerce version of the Drupal-to-modern migration in government.
