Northern Territory Police said a network outage was disrupting phone and digital services across the Territory. It asked people to call 000 only for life-threatening emergencies or crimes under way, and to visit a station for urgent matters that are not life-threatening. Its 131 444 line was also disrupted. iTnews reported on 8 October that the trouble began around 3am NT time. The Department of Corporate and Digital Development had access working again about 12 hours later, using methods it has not named.
The cause is not known. The government said the department is still hunting for the root cause and ways to prevent a repeat. The sources do not say whether one fault hit every system. iTnews said the outage was called Territory-wide, touching Police, Health and Education. Other agencies reported trouble with phones, email and servers. The government said triple zero stayed up and hospitals kept treating patients.
This is general reasoning, not a claim about NT's network design. When phones, email and servers share one network run by one department, a single failure can reach many agencies at once. Buyers can ask three questions. How far can one fault spread? What is the fallback for non-urgent contact? How is the stopgap plan tested?
