Anthropic has trouble securing cloud capacity, leaked filing says

TechCrunch, citing a leaked S-1 reported by the Wall Street Journal, says AWS, Google and Microsoft increasingly see Anthropic as a competitor.

In brief
  • A leaked S-1 filing says Anthropic is struggling to get enough computing power from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which treat it more and more as a rival.
  • Anthropic leases its own data centers and uses outside operators, and it fears their short track records.

TechCrunch reported on 20 October on a leaked S-1 filing, the paperwork a firm files to list its shares. The Wall Street Journal obtained it. Anthropic is struggling to get enough computing power from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which more and more treat the Claude maker as a rival instead of a client. The Journal said Anthropic lost $80.7 billion in the first half on $16.3 billion in revenue.

Anthropic leases its own data centers and also works with outside operators. The filing says it fears their short track records may make them less reliable than the big three. Reuters and the Financial Times reported in late September that Anthropic thinks cloud contracts could cost over $750 billion, with some still under negotiation. TechCrunch does not say how big the capacity shortfall is. Anthropic had not replied to its request for comment.

Background, not from the filing: AI models run on chips in data centers that need power and space, so too little of it limits how many people a service can serve. Our reading: the cloud giants sell that capacity and also compete with Anthropic, which turns to operators it calls unproven. If you build on Claude, ask where its capacity comes from and what your contract promises on uptime.
