The web isn't a diverse ecosystem. It's a near-monoculture with a few dominant species. Three platforms — two legacy CMS and one ecommerce platform — power nearly 9 out of 10 detectable websites.

The HHI Problem

The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) for the web's framework market is 0.54. For context, the US Department of Justice considers any market with an HHI above 0.25 to be 'highly concentrated.' The web's framework market is twice that threshold. By antitrust standards, this is a monopoly.
