Tech in Asia reported that GoTo unveiled a language model at Bali Tech Week on October 19. It has 27 billion parameters, which counts the adjustable values inside a model. GoTo built it for Bahasa Indonesia and regional languages. The company calls it open source, free to use and change. GoTo says it drew the training text from partner media and from websites of public bodies. Universitas Sumatera Utara helped gather Batak-language material.
Tech in Asia ties the release to GoTo's open-model work, which began in 2024 with Sahabat-AI, built with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. GoTo says institutions can host the new model on their own servers. The report names no regional language besides Batak. It gives no licence terms, test results or download location. It also names no institution that plans to use the model.
Hosting a model yourself changes who holds the data. It does not change who does the upkeep. Tech in Asia notes that analyses of Indonesia's data-localization rules say some public-sector and strategic data must be stored and processed in the country. Those analyses add that this need not mean on-premise hosting. For a model GoTo describes as open, buyers should ask four things: the licence, the test scores, the hardware needed, and who gives support.
