Google tests a Gemini setting for wider access to your Mac

BleepingComputer reports a hidden option in the Gemini Desktop app that is not live and not confirmed by Google.

In brief
  • A hidden Gemini Desktop setting would let the AI reach files and apps across a Mac. Google has not confirmed it.
  • Gemini would still ask before buying, moving money, or accepting legal terms, BleepingComputer reports.

BleepingComputer reported on 3 October that Google is testing a hidden setting in its Gemini Desktop app for Mac. TestingCatalog spotted it first, the outlet said. The setting is named "Additional sandbox options." When on, Gemini could read, create, change or delete files anywhere on the Mac. A pop-up says it could also act through apps such as Mail, Safari and Messages.

A sandbox is a fenced area where software may work; this is general background. The report says the setting would reach beyond folders a user has connected. The pop-up says Gemini may act without asking first, depending on the options chosen. It would still ask before buying, moving money, making accounts, accepting legal terms or changing sensitive personal details. The feature is not live, and Google has not confirmed it. No launch date or model is given. BleepingComputer adds that Apple is considering making it hard for AI agents to reach personal Mac files, with no detail.

The report suggests the limit moves from folders a person picks to files across the whole Mac. Buyers and IT leads can ask now: which Macs would allow it, who approves the opt-in, what log shows Gemini's actions, and how it fits device policy. The report does not answer these.
