GitHub retires selected AI models across all of Copilot

GitHub told users on 2 October 2026 to move to supported models, and enterprise admins may need to switch some on.

In brief
  • GitHub said it retired selected models in every Copilot feature on 2 October 2026. The text we reviewed does not name them.
  • Copilot Enterprise admins may need to turn on other models in their policy settings.

GitHub said in a changelog post dated 2 October 2026 that it has retired a set of AI models in Copilot, its coding assistant. The change covers every Copilot feature, and GitHub named Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. GitHub asked users to move their workflows and integrations to models it still supports.

The text we reviewed does not name the retired models. It also does not say which models should replace them, or whether any tool switches over on its own. GitHub said nobody needs to act to remove the retired models. It said Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to allow other models through the model policies in Copilot settings. Once a policy is on, the model appears in the model picker in VS Code and on github.com. GitHub Enterprise customers with questions can contact their account manager.

Teams that tie a workflow or integration to one Copilot model should check that it is still on the supported list. Enterprise admins may need to switch on policies before developers can see the alternatives.
