AWS brings Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 to GovCloud for regulated work

AWS says the models are on Amazon Bedrock in GovCloud (US) and shows how to run Claude Code there.

In brief
  • AWS says Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 now run on Amazon Bedrock in GovCloud (US). Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 hold FedRAMP Class D, and Sonnet 5 also holds DoD IL4/IL5.
  • Only the bedrock-runtime endpoint supports Guardrails and invocation logging. AWS tells readers to check current certification status.

AWS said in a blog post dated 5 October 2026 that Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 are now available on Amazon Bedrock in its AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. GovCloud serves US customers with strict compliance needs, including work under ITAR, the US arms export rules. The post explains how to run Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool, against these models. AWS said Claude Sonnet 5 holds FedRAMP Class D and DoD IL4/IL5 authorization. It said Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 hold FedRAMP Class D.

AWS describes two ways to connect: bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle. It said Guardrails (content filters) and invocation logging work only through bedrock-runtime. That endpoint is in both GovCloud regions, US-West and US-East. Bedrock-mantle is in US-West only. The post does not say Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5 hold IL4/IL5 authorization. AWS also told readers to check current certification status, so those listings may change. It said Bedrock secures the model side, while Claude Code on developer machines needs its own security review.

For teams that build or buy software under strict rules, this puts AI coding tools inside GovCloud. AWS advises Sonnet 5 where IL4/IL5 authorization is required. Teams that need audit trails should use bedrock-runtime, because logging is not offered on the other endpoint.
