Ahold Delhaize takes some systems offline after network security issue

The grocery group says stores are open, but the cause and reach of the problem are not yet public.

In brief
  • Ahold Delhaize said on 12 October that it took some systems offline after a network security problem. Its stores are open.
  • The company has not given a cause. BleepingComputer reported outages for staff and customers in several countries.

Ahold Delhaize, a Dutch grocery group, said on 12 October that its network has a security problem. Its teams are assessing and limiting it, and some systems are now offline. The company said stores are open and serving customers. BleepingComputer reported that the group runs more than 9,400 stores in Europe, the United States and Indonesia.

BleepingComputer reported that Stop & Shop staff had trouble reaching their schedules and pay stubs. It said websites, apps and customer service tools were unavailable for Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall in the Netherlands, and Delhaize in Belgium. An internal memo shared by Food Lion staff called it an IT outage and warned of order problems. Ahold Delhaize has not said what caused the problem or who is behind it. A spokesperson did not answer questions on whether store systems were hit, how far it spread, or whether devices were encrypted. BleepingComputer noted a ransomware attack in November 2024, when data on over 2.2 million people was stolen. The sources do not say the two events are linked.

For teams that run or buy retail software, the reports describe disruptions across staff tools, customer apps and order handling at several brands and countries. The company has not tied them to one cause or scope.
